The last three… books

Os três últimos livros

Baudolino, by Umberto Eco – translated by Marco Lucchesi
 Editora Record

The memories and adventures of Baudolino, the adopted son of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and a liar by nature. A delightful medieval fable, mixing fantastic storytelling, mystery and lots of adventure. A must read for anyone who is curious about the Middle Ages and the (mythological?) Christian universe, as it addresses issues such as the Holy Grail, for example. And the political aspect of the book is very current, is interesting to draw a parallel with the present day.

Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, by Haruki Murakami
original title: Mekurayanagi to, nemuru onna  Vintage Books

I’ve always heard so many good things about Murakami, especially about his best known book 1Q84 (published in three volumes between 2009 and 2010). I decided to start with something lighter and chose this short stories collection, written by the author between 1980 and 2005, and fell in love madly. I suffered with the end of each short story, wanting them to continue on forever (or at least a little bit longer, to the point of becoming novels).

Discovering the World, by Clarice Lispector
original title: A Descoberta do Mundo • Editora Rocco

468 chronicles Clarice wrote for Jornal do Brasil (a brazilian newspaper), between 1967 and 1973. It’s very interesting to see the strangeness (and genius) of the author with this “new” format, that she questioned and struggled to master. I think this book can be read at once or little by little, as small pearls of wisdom. We definately don’t make human beings like Clarice anymore.

Les lampes Chantilly

Les lampes Chantilly Les lampes Chantilly Les lampes ChantillyLes lampes Chantilly

Les lampes Chantilly or the Chantilly Lamps are a project by french designer Constance Guisset, whose objective was to design delicate and funny lamps at a reasonable price (I did a little research and the large lamp costs about 140 euros). So very beautiful!

Salvador Dalí exhibition

Salvador Dalí no CCBB

I had not visited the Salvador Dalí exhibition here in Rio, at CCBB, for a number of reasons. Among them, I must confess, is the fact that I’ve never been a big fan of the surrealist movement. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the importance of the movement (and I have enormous sympathy for the binding of Dalí with psychoanalysis), but his work never “caught” me, you know?

I had seen a lot of his work in museums I visited while travelling and was determined not to face the huge weekend queues at CCBB. But then I received an irresistible invitation for a guided visit to the exhibition this week, for guests only, and I had to check it out. I was surprised at how beautiful the exhibition is. If you have the opportunity to visit, I highly recommend it. Here’s a few pictures of what you’ll find there:

Beauty favorites – july

Beauty favorites - july 2014

These are a few of my july beauty favorites:

1. Natura Tododia Red Berries Deodorant Bath Moisturizer – If you want to get out of the shower with a super moisturized and fragrant skin, this is the product for you! It’s been a little cold over here lately, so I’ve been using this bath moisturizer for a few weeks now (this way I can get dressed as soon as possible when I get out of the shower). Amazing!

2. Mary Kay Gel Eyeliner – Love in the shape of an eyeliner. That is the best definition for this gel eyeliner. Waterproof and with a great texture, it comes with a mini brush that helps you apply the product with total accuracy, even for amateurs in the art of makeup (like myself)!

3. Mavala Eye-Lite – Eye Make-up Remover Gel – This make-up remover for the eye area was especially developed to remove waterproof products in this region, which is the most delicate part of the face. Just dampen a cotton pad with water before applying a small amount of the gel (as pictured), holding it on the eyes for a few moments, without rubbing. It’s very effective!

4. Depil Bella Camomile Body Gel – Enriched with extracts of comfrey, calendula and chamomile, this gel is a great after shaving option. It “calms” and hydrates the skin. It can also be used as a after-sun gel, post-manicure and aftershave (the boy uses and loves it!).
